■ <+ THEFT FROM A BEDROOM. A STOLEN DRESSING-CASE. v At" the Police Court yesterday before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., George Harrison, 53 years of age, was charged with stealing from the dwolling of Jean Carter a dressing-case, valued at £5, the- property of Valerie Dalrymplo. He was further charged with the theft of a saddle, the property of George Morloy. Ho pleaded guilty to both charges. Detective-Sergeant Hollis said that the accused w*i a " prowler." He climbed into tho bedroom of a Wellington lady previously staying in Auckland, and mado off with her dressing-case containing her clothing. He was arrested by Detective A. Hammond. Sinco 1888 he had been convicted on 67 charges. The magistrate sentenced Harrison to six months' imprisonment on each charge, tho sentences to be cumulative. _ THEFT OP A SHIRT. A charge of stealing a silk shirt, valued at 13s 6d, tho property of John Robertson, was preferred against Edith Mary Iverson, aged 4.j years. ~Tho complainant, who rosides with his sister at Grey Lynn, said that accused had been at his sister's house, and after she left the shirt was missed. Margaret Marion Doolan, sister of the previous witness, also gave evidence. Detectivo Sweeney said he searched the accused's houso for tho shirt and found it in a wardrobe. The accused said she had no knowledge how tho shirt como to be at her house. She admitted that she had been drinking. The magistrate said he had no doubt that the theft was occasioned by over-in-dulgenco in liquor. Ho dismissod tho charge on the accused agreeing to imme- ' diately take out a prohibition order, and to pay all expenses in connection with tho charge. OASES OF INTEMPERANCE. A large number of men, charged with drunkenness and offences arising out of drunkenness, appeared before Mr. F. V. Frazcr, S.M. Three first offend ire were convicted and discharged. One man was ordered to pay 17s 6d medical expenses, and another ordered to pay £3 18s medical expenses. Fines of 5s were imposed on four men. The bail of one man, 10s, was forfeited. William Thomas Hammond, a second offender, was fined 10s. Patrick Cavanagh, who was injured during a drunken bout, was ordered to pay the 10s 6d medical expenses. Walter Humby, who mado his 58th appearance, was charged with drunkenness and with procuring liquor while prohibited. He was convicted and fined £2 on tho second count. A feeble old man, Hugh McFadyen, was similarly charged, and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, and was committed to the care of the Salvation Army. For failing to comply with the provisions of his prohibition order, John Albert Hedley was fined £2. John Francis O'Keefe, _ charged with using obsceno language, with committing an assault, and with resisting the police on the occasion of a fight with a man named Parsons at Newmarket, was fined £3 on tho charge of assault. On the other counts ho was convicted and discharged. Harold Douglas Lockbart, on charges of drunkenness, procuring liquor while, prohibited, and of committing a breach of his probationary license, was convicted and discharged for tho drunkenness and breach of order, and was fined £2 for the third offence. William Kirk was charged with drunkenness and with -failing; to observe the provisions of his ~ probationary _ license. He was sentenced to a month's imprisonment. A Samoan member of tho Narrow Neck contingent, Oscar Meredith, admitted charges of using obscene language and using threatening behaviour in Customs Street on Monday afternoon. It was stated that the accused, with others, set upon another member of tho contingent, and would liave severely injured this man had tho police not interfered. On being arrested he made use of improper language. Sub-Inspector Mellveney said tho nun was well-behaved in camp. Tho accused was convicted and ordered to como up for sentenco when called upon. On a charge of procuring liquor while prohibited Charles A. Sullivan was fined £3, in default one month's imprisonment. For being drunk in O'Rorko Street he was convicted and discharged. | Colin Cameron, alias Charles Carter, j was sentenced to six months' hard labour for vagrancy. ■ BY-LAW CASES. George Jeff was fined 5s for allowing a cart a|d horse to. stand unattended in Khyber Pass Road for a longer time than was necessary. Robert Price wa3 fined 5s for riding a motor-cycle at night without lights in Khyber Pass Road.
