THE RAIDER MOEWE.

AN ENCOUNTER AT SEA

How the Flamenco, one of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company's steamers, was captured by the Moewe was described at Plymouth last month by one of her crew, Mr. W. G. Whiteway, a resident of t .at town. He does not credit the report that the Moewe has returned to Germany, and expects that she will bo heard of again, believing that she is hiding m ouc of the creeks of the Amazon.

Tho Flamenco left Newport on January 21 with coal for Santos. About three weeks later, on a Sunday, when 30 miles north of Fernando, tho steamer fell in with the raider, which fired a blank shot across her bows. The S.O.S. eignal was at once sent out bv her wireless. Thereupon the Moewe opened fire, and with her first shot put the wireless room- out of action, the operator having a very narrow escape.

Other shots fell, and five took effect, 5 with tho result that the Flamenco began Ito founder. Captain Martello at once had the boats prepared for launching. Meanwhile the Moewe continued firing, and a fireman was badly wounded in the abdomen by a splinter of ehell. Two other men were shot by rifle bullets, "but as soon as the boats touched tho water tho raiders ceased fire. One of the lifeboats capsized, and 15 men fell into the water. Fourteen were picked up, but one was drowned. All the survivors were taken on board the Moewe, which later sank the Horace and captured the Westburu, to which the crews were transferred and sent to Tcndffe.
