EFFECT ON FRUIT-GROWING.

Cut TELEGRAPH-PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Nelson, Friday. The serious position in regard to the Nelson fruit crop, owing to the shortage' of tonnage preventing shipment to excellent markets, has been brought unofficially before the Board of Trade by Mr. H. T. Hill. Mr. Hill suggested a campaign to supply all parts of the Dominion at a cheap rate. If required, the Board of Trade* will take evidenco here, and a request will probably be made by the .Fruitgrowers' Association. The members I of the Board of Trade* proceeded to Wellington to-day.
WEST COAST TIMBER INDUSTRY,
THREATENED CLOSING OF MILLS. [by. TELEGRAPH.— association.] Gretmouth, Friday.
The West Coast timber industry is seriously hampered by shortage of shipping. Sowo thousands of pounds' worth of timber is on the skids, and millers are unable to fill orders owing to paucity of ships. The Union Company explains that it cannot fill engagements. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, a resolution was passed • to approach the Government to see if the position can be ameliorated by the release* of ships. If immediate relief is not forthcoming all the mills will close down at an early date.
