Buckland. an ex-Mayor of Cambridge, occurred suddenly lon Wednesday night. The deceased gentlej man, who had been suffering from heart ' ' trouble for some years, telephoned to Dr. ! I Stapley, who motored to MonovaJe, where j i Mr. Buckland resided with his son, Mr. j Channing Buckland' and shortly after the. ■ doctor's arri\ al Mr. Buckland passed quietly away. Mr. Buckland, who was 73 years of age, was the son ; of Mr. William Thome Buckland, who was member of Parliament for Raglan in 1865-66, and for Franklin from : 1871 to 1875. He was educated privately ! and at St. John's College. Mr. W. F. Buckland, who was Mayor of Cambridge from 1899 to 1905. and subsequently from 1905 to 1910. had a strong personality and a fine career of public service to Ins ' credit. Originally a civil engineer, he later became a barrister and solicitor, practising his profession for a short time in Auckland and later at Cambridge. He also found time to take an active interest in agricultural pursuit,-;, and was an enthusiastic and successful horticulturist. i He was member of Parliament for Franklin I North from 1834 to 18S7, and for Manukau from 1890 to 1895, bat the public life by which lie will he best remembered was lat Cambridge. It was here, in 1905, in ! the face of strong opposition, that" ho I introduced and carried through his progressive policy- -viz., the high level bridge. I waterworks, town hall and library] I municipal salesards, sewerage scheme, etc. i Mrs. Buckland predeceased her husband Xseveral years ago. Mrs. J. Phillips, of Tlpoh. Straits Settlement, and Mr. C. j Channing Buckland. of Cambridge, are the only surviving members of the deceased's family.
