RECRUITING CAMPAIGN.

MEETING IN SYDNEY. RACE FOR CONSTANTINOPLE. (Received October 12. 2 am.) Sydney, October 11. The new recruiting campaign has been opened. Bands paraded the streets, and a big meeting was held in the Town Hall, where addresses were delivered by the GovernorGeneral, Sir Ronald Monro-Fergu-son, and Federal and State political leaders. The speakers laid stress on the gravity of the developments in the Balkans. Mr. W. M. Hughes, Federal Attorney-General, declared that if the Germans reached Constantinople first it would mean a serious menace to Australia, but if the Australians got there first it would be the beginning of the end of the war. Mr. Cook, Leader of the Opposition, declared that, allowing for casualties, medical and other services, there were not more than 40,000 Australian fighters at the Dardanelles. The meeting resulted in a good number of recruits enlisting.
