CLAIMS OF THE ENEMY.
GERMAN COMMUNIQUE. EAST AND WEST. Amsterdam, October 3. A German communique says:— "The British on Friday night tried to recapture the ground taken, but failed with heavy losses. French attacks south-west of Agres, eastward of Souchez, and northward of Neuville, were repulsed. Our prisoners increased to 106 officers and 3642 men, together with 26 machineguns. The French attacking eastward of Auberive penetrated at a single point. We counter-attacked and took 70 prisoners. The remainder fell. We brought down an aeroplane and another fell, on fire I at Soissons. '
m General von Hindenburg made prisoner 1100 Russians near Smorgone Linsingen, and 1300 on Kormin. We took prisoner a further 1100 at other points. The Russians attempted to break through westward of Tarnopol, but failed, leaving 500 dead."
TURKISH REPORT. ARTILLERY ACTION. Amsterdam, October 3. «£ X is !\ munique states: Near Sedd-el-Bahr the Turks silenced some enemy batteries and destroyed a portion of the trenches on the left wing. They exploded a mine by means of a countermine on the right wing."
