QUOTA FROM AUCKLAND.

CONTINGENT GOES SOUTH TO-NIGHT.

A quota of 104 men for the field ambulance is to leave the Auckland district today for Palmerston North. The number which No. 1 group has been called upon to supply is 82, and the men will proceed South by the Main Trunk train to-night. The present ambulance draft has been called up on the understanding that the men may not expect any leave, as they will probably depart for the front at an early date. A parade of local men who have enlisted for tho field ambulance branch of the service was held at the Drill Hall last night for the purpose of selecting those who would be prepared to go away to-night. Several stated that the notice given was too short to enable them to complete their private affairs*, but 56 intimated their willingness to leave immediately. Over 20 more are required, but this number will bo obtainable to-day. The men on the local list unable to avail themselves of the opportunity of going into camp at the present time will be posted to future ambulance drafts. The names of those selected last night are as follows : —

Veitch, Hamilton. F. Wakefield, Hamilton. MINERS' CONTINGENT. RECRUITING AT WAIHL [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Waihi, Wednesday. Following on the decision of the Defence authorities to raise a corps of miners and others used to tunnelling work for service at the Dardanelles, Major Browne, commanding No. 2 Group, visited Waihi to-day with the object of enlisting volunteers. Accompanied by Sergeant-Major Donovan, recruiting officer, the major attended at the Waihi Gold Mining Company's No. 2 shaft this afternoon to address the men coming off the day shift and those going on for the afternoon shift, the officials of the company having assisted with the details. There was a good attendance. The major said he hoped to provide 200 men from the group under his command, and detailed the rate of pay, duties, etc. The names of 20 volunteers were handed in. To-morrow afternoon Major Browne will address the men at the Grand Junction mine.
