FIFTY YEARS AGO.

SALE OF PROVINCIAL LAND.

PROSPECTS OF WHANGAREI.

(From the HEEALD of September 13. 1865) The Deputy-Waste Lands Commissioner held a sale of general country lands at his office on Monday afternoon, when lots were offered in the Kaipara, Wade. Kaukapakapa, Mahnrangi, and Whangarei districts. The bulk of the land was in the Whanui Block, Whangarei, and for several lots in it competition ran very high, some of them realising £2 an acre. Thero was a good deal of competition, and a great many lots were obtained without competition. The room was crowded during the sale, and a considerable number of persons attended yesterday morning to make their selection, so that nearly nil the lots in the Whanui Block "are taken up. Whangarei district seems to be a favourite with land-buyers, and this is, doubtless, caused bv the easv communication between it and Auckland", by its being already thicklv settled, and, above all. by the knowledge that the coalfield there- will very shortly be opened, and so cause an industrial population to be located there who will require supplies of agricultural produce. Persons who thus go and cultivate their ground in that locality may be certain of having a market at their doors for what they can raise.
