GERMAN ATTACKS ON THE WESTERN FRONT.

USE OF LIQUID FIRE AND ASPHYXIATING SHELLS. FRENCH LOSE 'GROUND AND REGAIN IT. Wellington*, September 12. The High Commissioner has sent the following report from London, under date September 11— "A French communique states that on the northern front there has been a very lively cannonade. In the Argonne the enemy bombarded the French with bombs of large calibre.

" At Schratzmaennelle the enemy forced the French to evacuate the first line of trenches, as a consequence of a liquid fire attack. The counter-attack enabled the French to regain the greater part of the trenches, the French : maintaining themselves near the former trenches which could not be reoccupied.

" Late yesterday the Germans attacked trenches on the summit of Hartmansweilerkopf, which they occupied. During the night the French, by a counter-attack, were enabled to retake the trenches. Later a violent new enemy attack on Hartmansweilerkopf was completely repulsed." (Received September 13. 8 p.m.) Paris, September 11*. A communique states: " A cannonade, uninterrupted all night, and particularly lively, prevailed in Artois, south of Arras and east of Eparges. "We crushed an attempt to attack near Sedkhubert, and completely repulsed a very violent attack at Hartmansweilerkopf." Paris, September 10. " The enemy attacked French positions at Lingekopf and Barehkopf, in the Vosges, using asphyxiating shells."
