ORGANISATION COMMENCED.

LARGE SUM WANTED.

For some time past the patriotic societies in other centres of New Zealand have been actively engaged in raising funds through " Carnival Queen" elections, to provide for the future welfare of wounded soldiers. As carnival has succeeded carnival, the amount of money raised has always doubled the preceding one. The Auckland Patriotic and War Relief Association has a great task in front of it. if it hopes to equal the splendid effort of Dunedin, whose carnival, just concluded, realised the large sum of over £150.000.

The Auckland association is at present conferring with Mr. Owen Cardston. who has conducted all the successful " Carnival Queen" elections in the Dominion. The committee hopes to secure the services of Mr. Cardst-on as organiser. At present he is en route to Perth, West Australia, to conduct a similar campaign there, but the committee is in communication with the authorities in Perth, with a view to seeing whether Mr. Cardston's services can be retained in Auckland until after the coronation of Auckland's " Carnival Queen." Nomination of " Queens."

The method of the campign is a comparatively simple one. Each of the abovenamSd units nominating a candidate will form as strong a committee as possible for furthering its candidate's interests. This committee will resort to all manner of means to obtain votes, which is done to i a large extent by means of books of tickets containing 30 and 120, ->aoh vote costing 2d. Experience has proved that the keenness to obtain votes for each candidate results in the very highest enthusiasm, and friendly rivalry "is displayed in all quarters. It is hoped that offers of prizes will be received for the art union, which will be promoted in connection with the carnival. The clerical work will be carried on in a suite of offices placed at the disposal of the committee by Mr. Chas. Rhodes, in the basement of the Waihi Gold Mining Company's Office in ShortI land Street. The Carnival Committee will be located there.
