THE CASUALTY LISTS
New Zealand is unhappily Uccoming familiar with long 'lists of casualties which toll of brave soldicVs Who died in duty-doing or lie in hospital after gallant service in ~ „,, a i.i "■ v I • the field. .As the lists increase , •, -~,., .... there avc few patriotic.homes which this darkest cloud of war does not overshadow and none which arc not the poorer by loss of relatives or , . , , mi ' i, • fnends. The supreme consolation is in the : unfailing heroism which marks the doings of our New Zcalanders, a heroism none the. less
consoling because it is displayed in an allied battle line where heroism is the common quality of every contingent. Ultimate victory is sure and certain because French and Russians, Italians, Servians, and Belgians, are inspired equally with tho British of the Empire to make any sacrifice rather than permit German y " fright fulness' ' to triumph in tho world. In this heroic combat. maintained against monstrous aggression by the allied nations the New Zealanders have won unqualified respect; the quiet steadiness and unflinching hardihood with which they fight against odds has given them a hard-earned place among the best troops of civilisation. The grief that cannot be denied is but a tribute that the loving pay to the righteous; cause for.;' which the best and ;bravest,":of "our "colonial
manhood gladly suffer or die. Hiftse soldiers of ours know, as we should know, that in far Gallipoli they stand between the homes that bred them and all the unutterable horrors of German invasion, and that in doing their. duty to the death they savct not only their own -people, but every nation that would be free. In the. years to come, when, peace shines again upon the world and liberty goes hand in hand with progress, sorrow for the fallen will be lost in proud and grateful memory of noble service and of brave deeds clone. ■ "» -• ? • ' r ' I'.
