J. j i Brewin. T. H. Pardington, I. Lomas, -*r.d ! I C. C. Davis. | I The council lias been anxious to obtain ! j a piece of land for another cemetery, as ] the present ground, consisting of seven | or eight, acres, at WaAkaruka. is rapidly i tilling up. So far the council has not I succeeded in finding a suitable section. j and as th* need may be said to liave j reached the acute stage, it was decided Ito approach the Minister for Internal ! Affairs with a view tc getting! a Bill j through Parliament authorising the council ; to utilise the present recreation reserve, j comprising about 22 acres, adjoining the j present burial ground. The council's idea I w-as to enlarge the cemetery by taking in i a portion of the reserve at a time, until I the. whole had v become a cemetery. The I council thought it would have no diffi- | culty in finding another recreation rej serve nearer to the centre of the town. : However, the proposal has been rejected j very definitely by the Minister, who : stated, in his reply to the council, that to extend the area as proposed would be j to establish a further cemetery -within' the borough. This, he said, he felt bound to oppose., as in his opinion the provis-1 ions of section 60 are salutary and neces- | sary, and no exception should be made I in any rase from tho limits imposed by | that section. The Patriotic Carnival Committee of | Taumarunui wrote asking the council's j : support for the following resolution :— I " That the Government be asked not to ! i enforce the Gaming and Lotteries Act i i during the present crisis so. as to enable | art unions on a larger scab? and with a j i wider scope of prizes to be held, always I provided the sanction of the controlling I | body for patriotic funds be obtained, and ; the proceeds from the art unions are for patriotic purposes." The council decided to support the Tau-
marunui Patriotic Committee. It was resolved to request the Fire Brigade Committee to go into the question of improving '.he fire alarm system in the borough. The council adopted Mr. Lomas's suggestion, "That a record, or roll of honour, he kept of the names of those residents of OnehTrtiga who have enlisted for the front. Th- 3 town clerk will receive any information from persons who . an i_'ive details of any resident of Onehunga who has gone to the front.
