SERIOUS OFFENCE.
THREE YEARS' IMPRISONMENT.
A max, 2, years of ago, named James Eggenton, who had previously received reformatio treatment for breaking and entering and theft, came before Mr. Justice Cooper yesterday for sentence on a crarge of carnal knowledge of a girl vnder 16 years of age, of winch he had been found guilty. Mr. R. A. Singer, who appeared for the prisoner asked His Honor to take into consideration certain circumstances, one to nil ' VaS^ h '* JUrys commendation to mercy on the ground that there had been negligence on the part of the mother in not properly looking after the girl. There seemed to him to bo justification for the statement that the mother had been negligent, though he did not suggest that she know that offence, were being committed. Prisoner had accused certain witnesses of conspiracy an <\ perjury ami therefore the punishment must be severe. Eggenton would be sentenced to three years' in,, prisonment with hard labour. '
