GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE.
NO FOOTBALL THIS WINTER.
London, July 19.
In the House of Commons, Mr. H. J. Tennant, Under-Secretary for War, in response to a request for an expression of the views of the Government, in regard to football, replied that although the measures taken in 1914 did not realise all the results desired, they were in the main satisfactory. The Government looks confidently to those responsible to restrict matches in accordance with the strong public feeling. The Football Association has decided that no cup competitions or international matches will be played. The players will not receive any remuneration this season. AUSTRALIA FOLLOWS LEAD. SUSPENSION OF CRICKET. Sydney, July 20. The executive of the Cricket Association has adopted a recommendation that next season's inter-State matches be suspended on account of the war. REDUCTION OF RACING. ACTION IN VICTORIA. (Received July 20, 11.55 p.m.) Melbourne, July 20. In view of the war the Victorian Cabinet has decided to curtail race meetings by at least one-third. Before acting the Government will confer with the racing clubs.
