NEED FOR STRONG FUND. WANTS OF RETURNING SOLDIERS. A statement in reference to the provision to be made in Auckland for the reception of wounded and sick soldiers was made by the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, yesterday. "The Minister for Defence," he said,"" has made a definite statement on this point which, in effect, means that the responsibility for the reception and attention of wounded men at the outset lias been placed upon the shoulders of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. The Hospital Ship and Wounded Soldiers' Relief Fund, coming under the control of the Citizens' Committee, will be available for rendering further assistance to the wounded, for which help there will no doubt be a very extensive demand. We must bear in mind that probably for many months we shall have our wounded men regularly arriving, and the opportunities for rendering assistance, both in cash and kind, will be very many. We are only at the beginning of our obligations, and our resources will be taxed to the utmost before our liabilities are discharged." HELP FROM THE THEATRE. PANTOMIME ARTISTS' MATINEE. Arrangements are being made by */he members of the J. C. Williamson Par tomime Company to assist in the raising of funds for the Hospital Ship and Wounded Soldiers' Relief Fund during their stay in Auckland. While the company was in Wellington it gave a special matinee performance, and thus added £400 to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. The principal item of the programme was the performance of the trial scene, from "Pickwick," in which the Pantomime Company was assisted by prominent legal practitioners of Wellington. COMFORTS FOR HOSPITALS.

MOPE MONEY REQUIRED.

[BT TEIEMUTH.-rRESS ISSOCUTIOK.]

Duxedin, Tuesday. The provision of comforts for disabled soldiers in hospital in Egypt and England was mentioned by a reporter to tho Hon. Jas. Allen, Minister for Defence. He said he desired to draw a clear distinction between ordinary hospital necessities and conveniences and provisions for sick and wounded, and what he would call special comforts—writing ' paper, shaving material, books, etc. He thought such comforts just the sort of thing to be supplied by the generous public of New Zealand. Money had been donated by the public to the Empire Defence Fund for the purpose of providing comforts for sick, wounded, and convalescent soldiers. ' He had, already forwarded those sums and more. When a telegram reached him asking for more he immediately sent £2000.' He had public money in hand now for the purpose of providing comforts for the sick and wounded, and he thought it would be wise if the Minister for Defence were kept supplied with a certain amount for this special purpose.
