MEAT IN COOL STORAGE

TWO MILLION POUNDS WORTH

fAi SHIPS COMING OUT, [BT telegraph.— correspondent.) Palmebstox North, Tuesday. Speaking at the opening of the Manawata Winter Show the Prime Minister referred to the shortage of insulated space. He said he did not think there would be any more vessels available next season. The outlook, however, was very good. There were no fewer than 17 insulated ships en route to New Zealand, but there was today in the cool stores £2,000,000 worth of i carcases. " He estimated that these would need 20 ships. Although the 17 vessels coming would make a big hole in the quantity to be taken away, he uas afraid that they would not be able to get the whole of the meat away before the new season commenced. To show the tremendous development in the export trade i.a said that three months ago, when the New Zealand Government had taken over the purchase of meat for the Imperial Goveminent, he had endeavoured to arrange a credit of half-a-million pounds, but had some difficulty in arranging the sum because the farmers on this side of the world were afraid that tho country would not be able to export produce to that extent. Since that date, however, he had paid in cash over £2,000,000, and we had another £2,000,000 worth of meat in store. These , figures demonstrated the great ex. tent to which the export trade of tbj Dominion had grown.
