EPSOM AND AMALGAMATION.
CITY COUNCIL'S DECISION CRITICISED. The decision of the City Council to defer consideration of the proposal that the Epsom road district be amalgamated with the city, was the subject of comment at the meeting of the Epsom Road Board last night. The chairman (Mr. F. H. Wood) s'aid he believed it was generally understood that it was the desire of the City Council that Epsom should join- the city, but, in the meantime, the resident? of the district had to await the council's pleasure. He said that the board would, proceed with its work precisely as if no action had been taken. If the board incurred any responsibilities, the . City Council would have to take them over.
Mr. E. Clay, a member of the board, gave it as his opinion that the City Council - was acting very unwisely in, refusing the, ' board's application for amalgamation. If a" , poll were taken now, the proposal would :? be approved by an overwhelming majority, whereas in twelve months'' time it was ~ very doubtful if the poll would ..be carried t«a at all. ■ I -..... .* _;. ; ; ~„..;'■;,. < The chairman 'considered that. at pro-,j.. Nevertheless he v felt that if the Road Eoard district ■progressed as it had "done recently, when the '■'■'; City Council wanted the district to join '**' the city, ' the ratepayers might not desire \ '? to do so.
