ABOARD JAPANESE STEAMER.

An unexpected arrival at Auckland last evening was the Japanese cargo steamer Kwanto Maru. The vessel is bound from' Talcabuano, a Chilian port, to Melbourne, with a cargo of oats, and is also carrying 220 South American emigrants. The Kwanto Maru met with heavy weather in the Pacific, and as her coal supply began to run short, Captain Holm decided to make for the nearest port,. to' obtain fresh supplies. The steamer will take in about 600 tons of coal from one of the hulks to« day, and is expected to resume her voyage this evening.

The vessel's passengers include Welshmen, Russians, Italians, and Spanish. These people are mostly farmers, and intend to settle in the vicinity of Port Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. One of the Welsh families has ieen farming in 'Jhe Argentine for 29 years. The majority of the others had also been engaged in farming in that country; all were more or less dissatisfied with the conditions under which they had to work there. There are 12 women ana! 58 children in the party. The Kwanto Maru is making her third visit to this port.
