THE OLD AND THE NEW NAVY OFF BELGIUM: H.M.S. EXCELLENT (DATING FROM THE 'SEVENTIES) AND A NAVAL SEAPLANE. In his recently published despatch'regarding tho naval operations off the Belgian coast, Rear-Admiral Hood said: "It soon became evident that tnore and heavier guns were required in the flotilla. The Scouts, therefore, returned to England, while H.M.B. Venerable and several older cruisers, sloops, and gun-boats arrived to carry on the operations." The Excellent is one of the old "flat-iron" gun-boats. of forty years ago, so nicknamed from their shape. Of late years they have been used for harbour and instructional service. The Excellent (formerly called the Handy), of 508 tons, was re-named on taking the place of the old wooden line-of-battle ship Excellent as a gunnery school-ship. Surrey, when the well-known actress, Miss Miriam Clements, was married to Major Walker-Leigh, of the Royal Fusiliers. The photograph shows the bride in the act of cutting the wedding cake.
