OBITUARY.

MR. E. B. PARSONS.

News was received in Auckland yesterday of the death at Shioya, .Japan, of Mr. Edward Brendon Parsons, who for 41 year" was secretary of the Auckland Gas Company. Mr. Parsons was born at Laiinceston, Cornwall, England, and was educated 'at Plymouth. In 1862 he left London for New Zealand on the ship Devonshire, and landed at Auckland on 'February 7, 1853. Mr. Parsons went to Dunedin, where he was employed as corresponding clerk and ledger-keeper in th« firm of Messrs. Dalgety, Rattray and Company. He entered the service of the Auckland Gas Company as accountant in February, 1868, and in the following year was appointed to the secretaryship, in consequence of the removal to Sydney of his predecessor, Mr. J. N. Wark. In March, 1909, Mr. Parsons resigned his position and left Auckland to reside at New Plymouth. Although he took no active interest in civic affairs, '• Mr. Parsons had many friends, and was regarded as a man of the strictest integrity. A few years ago, he left New Zealand for Japan.

The late Mr. Parsons, who had passed his 80th year, is survived by three sons— Mr. Arthur Parsons, manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company in Perth, Mr. Edward Parsons, manager of the British Dominions General Insurance Company in-the East, and Mr. William Parsons, engineer to the Colonial Sugar Refining Company in Australia—and two daughters. —Mrs. Paton, wife of the New Plymouth manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company, and Miss Parsons, who was with her father in Japan.

PRIVATE JOHN MrMILLE.N. John McMul!en, a member of the 65th Regiment, which participated in the Maori War. died at the Veterans' Home on Molidav. He arrived in New Zealand with his regiment in 1846. and took his discharge in 1865. Since then he had resided in Auckland. The interment will take place to-day, and the late private will he accorded a military funeral.
