BRITISH GAIN GROUND IN LA BASSEE REGION.
GERMANS SUFFER HEAVILY FROM ARTILLERY FIRE.
ENEMY'S FIRST LINE OF TRENCHES RETAINED.
London, June 18.
Sir John French's latest despatch says: " Fighting on the northern and southern portions of our front continued throughout the 16th, with the co-operation of our allies in an attack about Arras. East of Ypres all the German first-line trenches previously captured remain in our hands despite two counter-attacks, which were repulsed with heavy loss to the enemy. We, however, were unable to retain those of the enemy second-line trenches, which were occupied in the morning.
" We have slightly advanced to the east of Festubert, west of La Bassec, as the result of further attacks, and, judging from the numerous dead Germans in the trenches, our artillery fire was very effective."
