WORKERS MUST STRIKE HARD.

London, June 17.

A deputation of workmen has returned from Flanders to Glasgow, telling their fellow-workers that it is a case of " shells, and more shells." There must be no stoppage of work from any cause whatever. What they saw in the trenches was awful.

Ben. Tillett, the well-known Labour leader, recently visited the front. Interviewed after his return, he said: "I have learned the meaning of the word ' strike.' Wo have got to strike now with every ounce of British grit, energy, gold and brain behind the blow. When the workers of England realise the situation they will get their coats off and give the soldiers proper backing. We want shells, gas, and every death-dealing device conceivable."

MACHINE-GUNS WANTED.

NEW ARM OF INFANTRY. London, June 17. The London Daily Mail urges the Government to hasten the production of machine-guns, placing orders without limit in Britain, Canada and the United States, and says that the Germans are virtually substituting . men armed with machine-guns for the old-fashioned infantry armed with rifles. Experience proves that an army which attempts to fight machine-guns with rifles is committing the same mistake as a man who attempts to run a foot race against a locomotive. ■

AUSTRALIAN AID. ;; "v '"" ' i— MANUFACTURE OF SHELLS. Melbourne, June 18. The Premier, of Victoria has announced that N the manufacture of shells has already' been commenced at the Newport railway shops. ' A representative committee of the various interests had been formed to forward the movement.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr. Lloyd George stated that he was consulting Lord Kitchener with a view to the appointment of a oody of scientists to advise the Government as to the fullest employment of all resources— mechanical,, scientific,/andt inventive.
