GALICIAN CAMPAIGN.

GREAT MOVEMENT IN PROGRESS

DECISIVE BATTLE EXPECTED. SUBMARINE THROUGH NARROWS TURKISH TRANSPORTS SUNK. 1 ' ALLIED SUCCESSES IN FRANCE.

Prom the Russian "Eye-witness" comes the clearest account yet published of the recent fighting in Galicia. He describes the German attacks as the biggest effort yet made to bolster up Austria. The attacks were chiefly confined to intense artillery fire, which was very accurate insofar as the German artillerymen were concerned. The right wing of the Russian advance in the Carpathians was outflanked and had to retire. Half a corps rectified its position without loss, but the other division had to fight its way through, and lost heavily. Reuter's correspondent at Petrograd brings the account up to a later date by declaring that the Russians had none the worst of the fighting east of Przemysl, and have delayed the Austro°German advance pending their final con* centration on positions further east. The decisive battle is expected to take place at Grodek, about 17 miles south«west of Lemberg. Austrian messages claim successful attacks at Grodek.

Another British submarine has passed the Narrows and attacked Turkish shipping. Three transports were sunk. According to one message, the feat was performed in the Golden Horn, beside Constantinople itself. Two Turkish attacks on the British positions in Gallipoli have failed.

Great activity is reported from the western front, where, at several points in the region north of Arras, important successes have been secured by the allies. 'Operations continue successfully in Alsace, where the Germans have set fire to a town which is threatened by the advancing French.

A successful raid by allied airmen on German positions at Zeebrugge, Heyst, and Knocke is reported. Serious damage is said to have been done. Italian naval airships dropped bombs on the important railway junction of Divacca, east of Trieste, doing great damage.

An Italian submarine has been torpedoed by an Austrian submarine.
