17th PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION. CLOSES APRIL 30, 1915. MOST ATTRACTIVE PRIZE LIST OFFERED IN AUSTRALASIA. IMPROVED CONDITIONS. PAYMENTS FOR ALL PRINTS PUBLISHED. The proprietors of the Auckland Weekly News have much pleasure in announcing their Seventeenth Photographic Prize Competition. The sum of £30 is offered under conditions which it is hoped, will prove even more popular than those of past years. The new teatures provide tor payment of all entries published—with the exception of prizewinning photographs—at the rate of os • 6d each for whole-plate size, and 2s M. each for half-plate size and less. These annual competitions are promoted with a view to encouraging photographers-bom professionals and amateurs-to produce pictures of the kind demanded by modern journalism. New Zealand is already famous for the high quality of its photographic work, but still further progress can be made, and it is for the purpose of forwarding this progressive movement that the Weekly News competitions are arranged. Unrivalled climatic conditions prevail in New Zealand, and photographers poweli great opportunities for doing the kind of outdoor work winch aa up-to-date illustrated newspaper requires. The competition is arranged in seven classes, which fairly represent all the kinds of work required of the newspaper paotograoher. Every person who possesses a camera can find in one or other 01 the classes something which he or she can do. City people may not be able to send a farm view, but they can easily secure a good seascape or a yachting snapshot, _ while Mie man on the land who never sees the ocean for years at a time might ha successful with a bush view or landscape. The competition is advertised early, so that competitors may have the benefit of •ho summer season and the Easter holidays in which to obtain good pictures The competition will close on April 30 next. . , 1 The following are the various classes and | the amounts of prizes offered :—

1. A New Zealand Landscape (with or without figure)- First prize, £3; second prize, £1. 2. A New Zealand Seascape (with or without figure). First prize, £3} second prize, £1. 3. New Zealand Adult Figure Studt (European or Maori). First prize, £3; second prize, £1. 4. New Zealand Child Figure Study (European or Maori). First prize, £3; second prize, £1. 5. Faiisi, Station, or Bush Lira Scene. First prize, £3; second prize, £1. 6. Yachting or Boating View. Firsfi prize, £3; second prize, £1. 7. Best General Collection of New Zealand Photographs. First prize, £4; second prize, £2.

Exhibits under Class 7 can also be entered in the various classes previously specified. The number of pictures entered by each exhibitor to total at least six. The prizes in Class 7 are open to all except those who win more than one first) prize in the other classes of the competition. CONDITIONS. No photograph previously published or entered for any other competition will be allowed to compete. The negatives must in all cases be the work of the competitor. Competitors should remember that small views, although allowed to compete, are not so suitable for reproduction as halfplates or full-plates. In awarding the prizes the suitability of the photograph for reproduction will be taken into consideration. Glossy bromide and glossy P.O.P. prints are the most suitable.

The proprietors will have the first right to reproduce any photograph sent in for competition. Such photographs, apart from prize-winning prints, will be paid for immediately after publication at the rate of 3s 6d for whole-plates and 2s 6d for all sizes smaller than wholeplate. All pictures entered in the competition remain the property of the Auckland Weekly News until such time as they are published by the proprietors. Good typical pictures of general interest are preferable to those of merely local interest.

I In sending in photographs prints I should be sent flat if possible. Particuj lars of the subject and the name and address of the competitor must he written on the back' of every print in pencil, without in any way damaging it. All photographs must be addressed to the " Competition Editor" of the Auckland Weekly News, and the class for which it ts entered should be clearly marked both on back of the photograph as well as on the outside of the packet. The results will be published in the Weekly News on an early date after th» day of closing. These conditions will be strictly adhered to, and the receipt of prints from a compear will be taken as sufficient guarantee that he or she is willing to abide by t!*em.
