THE RUINED TOWNS.

EIGHTEEN DESTROYED.

RELIEVING THE DISTRESS.

ITALY'S LONELY TASK.

Received January 18. 11 p.p.)

London, January IS.

A correspondent of Lloyd's News reports that the earthquake entirely destroyed IS Italian towns and villages. In 13 others scarcely a building is intact. A dozen other towns are damaged. During 24 hours 98 shocks were experienced, completing the demolition of walls, and imperilling rescue operations.

The correspondent states that the Italian Government has announced that in view of the international upheaval no relief or contributions can be expected from foreign countries, neutral or otherwise.
