REMUERA'S PROGRESS.
REVIEW OF PAST YEAR.
BUILDING ACTIVITY
It is a very gratifying fact." declared Mr. J. Dempsey, chairman of the Remu- j era Road Board, at last night's meeting in the course of a review of the year's activities, "that the district is progressing very steadily. We have issued Xti building permits during the year, the value of the buildings being approximately £83.000. which 13 very good indeed for a district like this, considering that during the latter part of the year the building trad© was slack. It shows an average of £650 for each permit granted, indicating the satisfactory class of building going up in Remuera. In addition to 'this we have a r.ew post office and large business premises have been erected. All this shows the progress of the suburb and the confidence people have in it.
' In regard to drainage, wo have made steady progress right through the ear. We have laid about 19.000 ft of reticulating mains, principally 9in and bin pipes, and we have made over 400 connections with the main sewer, so that practically the greater part of the thickly inhabited portion of the district is connected with the system. We have still W or 50 people within Teach of the system who have not avuled themselves of the privilege. Renin era ought to bo in a very healthy state: the gullies art* being Cleared up.
" .Special attention has been given to the cot paths, and the board has gone to great trouble and expense. Three or four streets left in an unfinished state were tarred and sanded, which was the only remedy for weeds- Hundreds of loads of scoria were deposited on the paths, some of which were not evenly graded The board has used 16,000 gallons of tar ;o date, and only 50 or 60 casks were left on handFive miles of footpath need attention, aud they should be temporarily mended. Roads have been improved in various parts of the district." Water mains, he proceeded, had been extended all over the district, two miles and a-half of new mains having been laid. They had used 60,000.000 gallons of water, the'pavment to the city amounting to about £3000 That sum would cover interest on a loan for a very large plant for an independent supply. Later on, this matter would be worth consideration. Members briefly discussed tho chairman's statement.
