A cablegram was received by His Excellency the Governor to-day stating that the Honourable Charles Monck, captain in the Coldstream Guards, brother of the Countess of Liverpool, had been killed on active service. An announcement of the death of Captain Monck was made by the Prime Minister in the House of Representatives. On his motion, a resolution was passed recording the sympathy of the House with the Countess of Liverpool on the death of her brother, killed while serving his King and the Empire. Mr. Massey spoke feelingly of the good work done by Lady Liverpool since her arrival in the Dominion, and said he felt sure that the whole of the people in the country would join in expressing sympathy with her in her sad bereavement. Sir Joseph Ward endorsed the remarks of the Prime Minister. The Honourable Charles Henry Stanley Monck was the only son and the heir of Viscount Monck. of Ballytrammon, County Wexford, whose only daughter is the Countess of Liverpool. His father saw active service with the Coldstream Guards in the Egytian campaign of 1882 and in the expedition to Suakin in 1885. He retired with the rank of captain in the latter year. The late Captain Monck was born "on November 9, 1876, and married in 1904 Miss Mary Florence Portal, daughter of Sir W. Portal, Bart. There are one son and one daughter in the family. Captain Monck served :n South Africa in 1899-1902.
