CANNING TOHEROAS.

GROWING INDUSTRY.

NORTH AUCKLAND BEDS.

The Chief Inspector of Sea Fisheries, Mr. L. F. Ayson, who was in Auckland yesterday, is visiting this province chiefly in connection with the toheroa industry.

Speaking to a Herald representative yesterday, ho explained that the known toheroa beds are along the coast from North Kaipara Head to near Maungonui Bluff. A good part of these beds has been worked for canning purposes, and are well known to the residents of the Dargaville district, where the shell-fish are extensively consumed. It had been reported that toheroas also exist in largo quantities south of Kaipara, and it was this area which he was going to inspect.

" A good deal of attention is being given at the present time to canning the toheroa," Mr. Ayson continued, "and the Department is considering the question of subdividing and leasing the beds. Two canneries have been operating on the beach at the back of Dargaville, and applications have been received by the Department from several other firms desirous of securing areas and commencing canning operations. If the supply is sufficiently plentiful, there is the prospect of establishing an important canning industry."
