THE LIQUOR QUESTION.

ANOTHER DEPUTATION.

CLOSE DIVISION FORECASTED

[dt telegraph.—tress association.]

Wellington, Thursday, Opposition to any reduction in the threefifths majority on tho licensing question, already represented by deputations from the trade, the moderate part*, and chartered clubs, was reinforced to-day by another large deputation to the Prime Minister from the hop-growers and barleygrowers of the Dominion.

The deputation pointed out that any reduction in the majority basis meant a serious menace to the hop and barley industries, and quoted figures to show tho importance of those industries.

Mr. Massey 6»id he would convey the views of the deputation to Parliament. He could not predict what the result of the first division on the second reading of the Licensing Bill would be. Members who represented the prohibition point of ■new considered the second reading would be carried easily, while the other side thought there was no chance of such a result. Taking the average of the two statements, he came to the conclusion that the division would bo very close indeed.
