WEEKLY HALF-HOLIDAY.
HOTELKEEPER PROSECUTED.
THE BARMAN'S SYMPATHIES.
[BT telegraph.— correspondent.]
Hamilton, Monday. Tire licensee of the Waikato Hotel, John Rountree. was charged at the Hamilton Magistrate's Court to-day with having failed to give his barman a weekly halfholiday. Th e barman stated that he did not receive a fixed half-holiday, but he was well treated, and the leave he received more than made up for the half-day weekly. He had made no complaint. ! The inspector stated thai he visited the I hotel and had a look at the book, which stated that the weekly half-holiday was Thursday. The housekeeper told him that the barman never had a. half-holiday. She admitted that there was a mistake in the book, which stated that the half-holiday had been granted on Thursdays. Defendant explained that he tried to keep the law. but there were so many technicalities about it that he thought the action against him favoured of persecution. He did not keep the holiday-book himself. The inspector stated that Rountree was the'' responsible party. The magistrate, in dismissing the case, said that the books would have to be letter kept in the future. It was not sufficient for defendant to say that he left them to his housekeeper, and lie would have to look after them himself. The law was perfectly simple, and he must see that it was carried out.
