NAMING Of STREETS.
J CONFUSION IN AUCKLAND. f ~~~ V i-( 4 FREQUENT REPETITIONS. - / - OVER 100 . INSTANCES. > Oke of the most striking examples of the _ confusion that is associated with, the mut-iplicity of local bodies in Auckland, and. which will require rectification as the /Auckland scheme is carried into • effect, is to be found in regard to street nomenclature. The '.amalgamation of the Parnell andArchhill districts with the citv has led to attention beicj directed to the . fact .that there are 15 instances of duplication and two of triplication in the names , of. streets in the enlarged area. This mat- . ? ter, • which was recently reported to the 1 Mayor by the city .valuer, has been refer•red to the Streets Committee of the City Council for consideration, and a report on the subject, no doufct, will .shortly bo subnutted to tli® council. , 'Ihe instances of the careless and happy- , go-lucky system v of naming Auckland streets, which is disclosed in the city , valuers report, form, however, only a fraction of the cases of names repeated two, three, four, five, and even in one - or two instances, sis to eight times, in the streets of the city and surrounding suborbs. The extent to which confusion must often be caused by these repetitions \ in the work of postal officials, cab and ex-press-drivers, and others may be imagined ! by an}' one who takes the trouble, to glance through the list of streets given in the directory. ° What the Directory Discloses. The list of streets in what may be « termed the " Greater ■ Auckland area" shows that there are upwards of 100 cases of names which arc used more than once in the naming of " streets," " roads," "terraces," "crescents," etc. There are no fewer than 60 cases in which the same names are used twice, and over 30 instances in which • they occur three / times. " " Argyle," "Eden," "Gladstone," and "Salisbury" are used four times, "Albert," "Prospect," "Russell," and " Sehvyn " five times. " Richmond " 'and " Victoria " appear in six cases (including three " Victoria Avenues") whilst " Domain" is to he found seven times and "King" or "King's" eight times. In some cases the names of streets, owing to duplications, have been changed by the suburban local bodies, but in a number of such cases the new name chosen has been one which is already in use in another district. In many cases the duplications occur in contiguous districts, which, of course, tends to' make "confusion worse confounded."
Triplications and Duplications. The following names are used three times:—Alexandra, Belmont, Campbell, Cameron, Clyde, Eden, George, Gordon, Grey, Greenwood, James, Kingsland, Mountain (and Mountain View), New, Oxford, Patterson, (Paterson and Patteson), Queen, Rose, Short, Spring, Stanlev, Station,- Sussex, View, York, Wolseley, William, and Vincent. The undermentioned names arc used twice: — Almor (and Almoraf, Arnold, Avon, Bank, Bath. Beach, Brown, Burgovne, Canada, Carlton, Chamberlain, Charlotte, Church, Clarke (and Clark), Clifton, Cracroft, Crescent, Darby (and Derby). Disraeli, East, Eglington, Elliot (and Elliott). No account is taken of further repetitions, which are to He found in Onehnneft, Avondnle. Be\onport. Birkenhead. Northcote, Takapuna, and other suburbs adjacent to the city, but which "are outside of what is ■ generally regarded ae the Greater Auck:land area. ■>.[ •'■■ ■ "• .•
