STREETS OF TERROR.
NEW YORK HIGHWAYMEN. Unemployment and hooliganism, even highway robbery, go hand in hand in New York. There are frequent raids .by the "wolves" from their lairs, on the East side, into the fashionable parts of the city. One such raid occurred a few weeks ago. when a large number of desperadoes made a simultaneous attack upon churchgoers and others enjoying a Sunday stroll in the famous Fifth 'Avenue. Several people were robbed, and though the victims did their best by calling for help none of the "wolves" were caught. One peaceable citizen was robbed of a purse and £5. Tliere can be little doubt these outrages are not unconnected with the fact that it was officially recorded that there were then 325.000 unemployed in the cities. Nevertheless business and trade were gradually getting better, Jjut there were still, even in New York. 140,000 unskilled workers who were out of work and clamouring for employment.
