RIFLE- SHOOTING.

THE TRENTHAM .MEETING; WELLINGTON MATCH. , AN ERRATIC WIND. * <■ [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] |BT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Tbehtham, Monday. Thb weather to-day fully justified the reputation the Trentham Range has obtained for trickiness and difficulty. Strong gusty winds blew all the morning, ' increasing in force towards mid-day, providing all the atmospheric difficulties known to make trouble fo"r marksmen. The consequence was that some noted riflemen went back, whilst men of lesser standing got into prominent positions. Thus at the Collins Range, out of a possible 100, F. W. Chingmade only 76. At the two raises in the Wellington match (600 and 600), Millroy's score was 89, and Masefield'a was 85. The best score at 600 yds was put on by Causley (Thames) 48, Loveday (47) being his nearest attendant. ■ Several 46's were recorded. The violence of the wind increased whilst the longer range was being fired, and 46 was the highest score notched. Ching, who had scored only, 29 at 500 yds, being the fortunate one. Considerable interest attached to the marksmanship of Milroy and Masefield, who fired at adjoining inoundj at 600 yds. Each finished with a similar score, 44 the respective total fecores being: Milroy 89, Masefield 85. The win was no less aggravating on the Sommo'rville Range than elsewhere, the most experienced marksmen finding the greatest difficulty in circumventing the vagaries of the elements. When the men of Section B lay down to fire in the Wellington match half a nor'-west gale was blowing, and scarcely any of the marksmen accepted their sighting shots. The best score was put on by Rifleman W. Cox, of the Auckland Rifle Club, who got within one of the coveted possible, but he found a Waterloo, waiting for hin at the next range, where he only got 32. This' left him 11 points below the winner, who .proved .to be Rifleman Cotterill, of the Wellington Highland Rifles. The next best score on this range was that of W. H. Thomas, of Petone, whose 89 was for a long time the best in Section B: Marbey, of Eltham was again well to the fore with 88, while Bent, of Auckland, made- a good run ■of 48 at the finishing range, also averaging 88. Following are the leading scores:
