MATCHES IN COAL MINE.
MAN SEVERELY PUNISHED.

Three men employed at the- Kaitangata coal mine,, one as a trucker and two as miners, were charged at the Kaitangata Court to-day with taking smoking materials into prohibited part* of the mine in the face of-the provisions of the Coal Mines Act, 1908. - » -
r Theinen were D - Betinie, A. Wilson, and L. Billett. % Bennie and Wilson, who had been caught with cigarette papers and tobacco in their possession, both pleaded guilty and were fined £5, with costs £2 9s. Billett, who did not appear, was fined the maximum penalty of £10, with costs £3 10s.
The magistrate (Mr. Bartholomew) com.mented severely on the seriousness of the offences, more particularly in the case of Billett, who carried luciJer matches into the mine after he had been warned against it two days previously. He characterised the offence as a, crime for which the i penalty of £10 was inadequate, and which. ( should be punished with imprisonment.
