; - v.. V'■ '~' .- '* '"■ Mr. John Mo Vat, who for soveral years was Mayor of Napier, is at present on a visit to Auckland. Sir Joseph Wafli, Bart., who delivered a political address in Te Aroha last night, leaves for Wellington by the Main Trunk express to-day. His Honor Mr. Justice Cooper arrives in Auckland this afternoon to preside over the civil sittings of the Supreme Court, which commence on Monday. Mr. John Roberts, C.M.G., has been appointed chairman of the board of directors of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand during the absence of Sir James Mills. Mr. J. H. Hosking, K.C., of Dunedin, who has been appointed to the Supreme Court Bench, was the subject of a congratulatory resolution passed by the Auckland Law Society yesterday. The Rev. A. Fowler, vicar of St. AiHan's, Rcmuera, leaves by the Riverina on Monday, en route for England, and will be absent for a year. The Rev. F. G. Harvey has been appointed his locum tenens. The Hon. W. H. Hemes left To Aroha last night for Frankton, en route for Wellington. Tho Prime Minister and Mr. Herries will pay an official visit to Te Aroha on February 10, and will bo enter tained at a banquet. Mr. G. Cruickshank, S.M. at Invercargill, will leave on a visit to England at the end of March. He will be absent about 12 months, »nd during that time his duties will bo carried out by Mr. Thomas Hutchinson, S.M. at Oamaru. Colonel H. 0. Knox will relinquish the office of Quartermaster-General of the Dominion Defence Forces at the end of this month. >ml will leave for England towards the end of February. On his arrival in England he intends to resign from the service. His duties as QuartermasterGeneral will bo taken over by Colonel A. W. Robin. J Dr Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, has returned from a week's visit to the Thamos, Paeroa, and the Tauranga district Ho administered confirmation in tho native missions at Karekare and To Puna, in both places catechising the children, and addressing the people, in Maori. On Sunday evening ho administered confirmation at Tauranga, and on the following evening at Te Puke. At Tauranga he received* civic welcome, at which the Mayor presided, and people of all religious beliefs were present. At To Puke he received an address and a presentation. He was accompanied throughout by Archdeacon HacKett, of Paeroa.
