RIFLE-SHOOTING.

CONCLUSION OF MEETING.

FAVOURABLE CONDITIONS.

PRIVATE T- L. LEE CHAMPION

The Auckland District Rifle Association's third annual prize meeting was concluded yesterday on the Penrose Range, under conditions much more favourable than those obtaining on the opening day, although they were still far from being all that could be desired. During the whole day a strong ■ south-west breeze blew across the range, and this several times brought up showers of rain.

The principal match of the day was the shoot-off for the district championship, carrying with it the Campbell Belt and the Logan Campbell medal. Only the '20 highest scorers in the aggregate matches were eligible to shoot for this honour. This year's champion proved to be Private T. L. Lee, ot the 16th (Waikato) Regiment, who is only 18 years of age. The shoot-off at 500 yds elicited much interest, 15 contestants presenting themselves. In the rapid fire the champion made 42 out of a possible 50, scoring three bulls, six inners, and one magpie, his time, including loading, being 50s. Captain Atkinson also shot very well, equalling Lee's total of 71. .

The Grammar School Cadets again annexed the Campbell Vase, defeating last year's holders, the Technical College Cadets. 6

At the close of the meeting the distribution of trophies and first prize moneys was made by Lieutenant-Colonel W. U. Braithwaite, D.5.0., general staff officer of the Auckland district. He congratulated the champion, saying that the latter's remarkable shooting performances had earned the esteem of everyone present at the meeting. He remarked that such superiority could only be the result of unlimited keenness and keeping fit. The handsome belt was'then put on the winner, the medal pinned on his tunic, and those present gave him three cheers.
