A gale which swept • over the city yesterday extinguished the street lamps and set the church bells ringing. The lower parts of the city near the river .were flooded, and the people had to take refuge on the roofs until they were rescued. The Neva rose Sift, and it required only another 6ft to have flooded the whole city. Guns were fired from the fortresses throughout the night and green lights were dis-* played from the Admiralty tower to indicate the extreme danger. All traffic was stopped over the bridges. The gale whirled many houses away, derailed waggons, and overturned pedestrians.
