BOWLING.

THE • AUSTRALIAN - TEAM. DEFEATED BY "ALL WHITES." TEST MATCHES COMMENCE TO-DAY. The Australian bowlers team commenced the actual business of the tour yesterday when they played the first match against the "All White" team, a combination of Auckland players who visited Australia in 1906 and the Auckland members of the New Zealand team of 1906. The Auckland while not looked upon as representative of the centre, defeated the visitors by a margin of 35 points in a sevenrink match. In view of the fact that the " All White" team by their enterprise in visiting Australia had largely brought about the visit of the Australian team, the Auckland Centre handed the visitors over to them for the day, and a programme was arranged, the visitors being the guests of the "All Whites" at Takapuna. The party left town by the Bayswater boat at 9.15 a.m. and journeyed to the Lake district by car. They were shown over the grounds of well-known residents and taken to Lake Pupuke, where they were much interested in the volcanic formation of the country. After lunch they were driven back to the Devonport green in brakes. Prior to play starting at Devonport Mr. Jas. Carlaw, manager of the 1908 team which toured Australia, extended the first true bowlers' welcome— welcome to a green the Australians. Ho explained that the game about to be played was not an official match, the main object being to allow old friends to meet again. The "All Whites" were greatly indebted to the local centre for allotting them a special day on which they might return in part the courtesies extended to them in Australia. Mr. G. Raff an, chairman of the Australian team, and Mr. S. Clark, manager, in reply, said that the object of the visit to New Zealand was to remove the obstacles which prevented Dominion teams from touring the Commonwealth. The Australian bowlers were waiting to give them a hearty welcome, and the ■ council hoped to see a large number of New Zealand bowlers at the Easter tournament of 1915. Mr. Raffan returned thanks for the hearty welcome, and Mr. Clark added that as they were being overwhelmed with hospitality, which evidently was likely to be continued throughout the Dominion, they would have a good excuse if they did not win a match. At the conclusion of the ceremony the "All Whites" lined up on the green" and, led by R. Rankin, gave a haka, and in reply the Australian bowlers, led by Mr. Raffan. sang a bowlers' chorus. The green at Devonport has more than a Dominion reputation, the visitors" having heard of its perfect playing qualities before leaving home. They were delighted, therefore, to play their first match on it. The green played very true, drawing equally on both hands, but strange as it may seem, the visitors found it too keen. The " All Whites " played a surprisingly good game and led on the aggregate from, the outset. Seven rinks of 25 heads each were played and the progress scores were as follow, the local teams being mentioned first in each case :—Fifth head, 35 points to 34; tenth head, 72 to 59; fifteenth head, 99 to 96 twentieth head, 144 to 128: twenty-fifth head, 185 to 150. A programme of vocal and instrumental items of high merit was arranged, and a toast list was honoured. Mr. J. Carlaw presided, and was supported by Messrs.
