A PUBLIC PRESENTATION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, Tuesday. In the Garrison Hall to-night a citizens' meeting was held to say farewell to the Right Hon. Sir J. S. Williams, P. 0., on the occasion of his retirement from the New Zealand Bench, and his departure for England to take a seat on the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council of the Empire.
The large hall was overcrowded, among those present being the Mayor of Dunedin (Mr. W. D. Stewart), the Hon. J. Allen, the Hon. A. L. Herdman, Sir R. Stout, Mr. Justice Sim, and many leading citizens representing the business, legal, clerical, and other sections of the community.
An illuminated address was presented to Sir Joshua, congratulating him on the high position he had so worthily filled as Judge of the Supreme Court for nearly 40 years, referring to his services to the university, and to his lengthy connection with the Patients' and Prisoners' Aid Society, and expressing regret at his retirement.
Speeches were made by the Mayor, Mr. Donald Reid, the Hon. J. T. Paul, Sir Robert Stout, and the Hon. Mr. Herdman.
Sir Joshua Williams replied in a very feeling speech, -which he spoke of many happy days spent in Dunedin.
