EMIGRANTS FOR AUSTRALIA.
CAMPAIGN ON THE CONTINENT.
London, January 12. The Commonwealth Office in London is inaugurating an advertising campaign in Scandinavia. The Commonwealth lecturer in Scotland is receiving many inquiries from prosperous farmers who are ready to settle in Australia.
Mr. Rayment. of the New Sovth Wales Immigration Department, Has visited Northern Italy, Switzerland, and Holland, and is appointing agents at Turin, Milan, and Amsterdam. He has interviewed the British Consuls and shipping agents in those towns, and has come to the conclusion that it would be possible to obtain a limited number of emigrants, most of whom would be skilled in intense culture, provided that the consent of the Governments under which they lived could be obtained to allow them to leave the country. Mr. Rayment said yesterday that the chief difficulty in obtaining emigrants would be found in the remoteness of Australia. The Italians, particularly, were totally ignorant as to Australia's position in the world. The men of Northern Italy are of a splendid type, and would be ideal settlers for the new Australian irrigation areas.
The Department is arranging to assist Italians with their passages when required. They will embark at Genoa or Naples. Mr. Rayment considers that it would be useless to send out foreigners as domestic servants on account of their low standard of intelligence.
