IMPROVING THE RAILWAYS.

GENERAL MANAGER'S TOUR.

The General Manager of Railways, Mr. E H. Hiley. accompanied by Mr. H. Buxton chief traffic manager, Mr. J. Burnett, chief engineer, Mr. Jackson, chief mechanical engineer, and other members of the Department, is at present in Auckland having completed an inspection of Frankton, Hamilton, Rotorua, and other centres in the southern portion of the province. Mr. Hiley still adheres to the policy he adopted upon his arrival, of keeping his own counsel upon Departmental matters and possible schemes of the future, giving his whole attention to his work ana shunning publicity. Before returning to Wellington, the General Manager and his party intend proceeding further north to inspect the northern railways.
