OBITUARY.

MR. RICHARD HULL.

The death occurred k*t evening of Mr. Richard Hull, of Epsim, who was for many years connected with the Government Stock Department in Palmerston South, Marlborough, Wanganui, and latterly in Auckland. He was the third son of the late Mr. Francis Holmes Hull, at one time M.P. for Marsden, and was a brother of Mr. Francis Hull, of Auckland. The deceased was a most popular member of the Remuera Bowling Club, of which body he was recently elected a life member. He was also at the time of his death one of the trustees of the Dilworth Institute. Three years ago he reached the age of 65 years, and retired from the Stock Department. He leaves a widow, two sons, and one daughter.

OLDEST SOLDIER IN DOMINION.

Mr Francis John Purvis islt of the Roy J N«vvy, and until recency c resident of the Veterans' Home, died at the Auckland District Hospital yesterday at the advanced age of 96 years. Deceased fought and was wounded at the battle of St. Jean D'Acre in 1840, and also took part in the assault on Gate Pah in 1863. He was seriously wounded in this action a bullet entering his body. At the time of the assault on Gate Pah he was a member of the crew of H.M.S. Miranda The veteran, up to the day before Christ mas, used to walk into Onehunga from the home every day. He was in receipt of the Imperial and New Zealand military pensions. The late Mr. Purvis, who was" considered the oldest veteran in the Dominion, will be buried with military honours at Waikaraka Cemetery tomorrow. MR. MARSTON HEYWOOD. Mr. Marston J. Hevwood, manager of the Auckland branch of the Government Life Insurance Department, died yesterday morning at the comparatively earlv age of 45 years. The deceased, who was a, son of Mr. Heywood, late secretory of the Treasury, entered the head office of the Department at as a cadet about 30 years ago After staying at headquarters for very many years, he was transferred to Dunedin about five years ago, and from the Southern city to Auckland two yewrs ago. The late Mr. Heywood was greatly | respected by his colleagues.
