CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES.

THE NINTH ROUND.

The ninth round of the chess tournament was played yesterday. The details are as follows: —

Grierson v. Gyles (Queen's Gambit Declined) : Grierson lost a pawn in the opening, another at the 24th move, and a third at the 51st move, and then resigned.

Stewart v. Moore (Petroff Defence): The opening become converted into a four knights game. Stewart completed his development ea4y, and outplayed Moore, who resigned at tie 24th move, as mate was threatening. Davies v. James (King's Gambit Declined) : James came out of the opening with slightly the better game, and might have won a pawn. A little later ho won the pawn, but at the expense of a knight. After this the issue was never in doubt. James resigned on the 35th move. Wingfield v. Hicks (King's Bishop's Opening): Wingfield commandeered a pawn early in the game, and soon developed a strong attack. Hicks resigned when the position became hopeless at his 32ad move.

Myers v. Selling (Four Knights Game): Myers gave up three pawns for a dashing attack, which Kelling managed to stave off. Being pushed for time, Myers did not make the most of the ending, and a slip cost him a rook. He resigned at move 41. Severne v. Mason (Three Knights Game): Severae was outplayed by a pretty manoeuvre in the middle game, and in order.to avoid mate had to suffer loss of queen and rook for two rooks. A few moves later Mason got a passed pawm. which threatened to queen, and Severne resigned. Miles v. Dodds (Buy Lopez): A dingdong game, full of ups and downs. Miles came, out of the melee with bishop and knight and pawns, against rook and one extra pawn. Later he compelled Dodds to give up rook for bishop. Dodds then resigned. Barnes had the bye. The players and their friends numbered about thirty. The weather was perfect, and the arrangements were made by Mr. F. Booth the hon. secretary, and his son, and Mr.' R. Barends.

On Saturday at the West End bowling green a return match was played between Mr. R. J. Barnes's team and Mr. John Courts team. The former consisted of Messrs. Booth, Little, Dodds, and Barnes, and the latter of Messrs. Tonkin, Gower, Colthurst, and Court. After an exciting finish, the cnessmen won by 24 to 22 Mr Barnes's team has been invited to plav a match at the Remuera Club's green "tomorrow. °
