LAST YEAR'S LAND ACT.

Under the Land Act. passed last session tenants of land for settlement lands and small Crown grazing lands have the right to obtain the fee simple of their holdings. The Act, which completes the freehold policy of the Massey Government, has been in force since November 11 last, but tip to the present no great number of applications from tenants for the freehold of their leases have been received at the Auckland Land Office. The applications, however, are now beginning to come in rapidly, and it is expected that a large number will he received during the next few weeks. The money received by the Lands Department as a" result of the conversions will he devoted to the purpose of other lands for subdivision, thus ensuring a continuous scheme of settlement. The Education Reserves Amendment Act, which was likewise passed last session, is also now in force. Under this Act, which principally affects the South Island,' power is given to the State to resume education reserves for subdivision purposes on the leasehold tenure, and subject to certain conditions.
