Mr John Stiaii'hon, Under-Secretary for Lands, will retire from the Public Service on superannuation on March 31, 1914. He will terminate his active duties at the end of this year. Mr. John Lomas, Secretary 'or Labour, will retire at tho same time.
Mr. W. C. Bnrd, who has occupied tho position of stationery clerk, in the head office of the Railways Department during tho last 16 years, has retired on superannuation. Mr. Bind joined the service at Clinstchureb in 1876. and had a record of service of 36 years.

Sir William Hall-Jones, formerly High Commissioner for New Zealand, and prior to that member ot Parliament for Timaru and Minister for Public Works in the Seddon and Ward Ministries, is to be asked to contest the Hawke's Bay seat in the Opposition interest at the next general election. Arrangements are being made for a deputation to present a requisition; to him in Wellington shortly.
Another of the rapidly decreasing band of early Auckland residents, in the person of Mrs. Dlphert, mother of the Rev. J. Olphert, of Rocky Nook, died on Thursday. The deceased, who had reached the age of 88, lived in Auckland for 53 years. Her husband and two sons predeceased her. and she is survived by one son, a daughter, and four grand-children, all of whom live in Auckland. ■■ •
Sir Joseph Walton, F.R.G.S., M.P. for Barnsley division (Yorks), will arrive at Bluff on September 29 and travel through New Zealand with the object of studying the political und commercial affairs of the Dominion. He has- travelled extensively in many parts of the world, and in 1910 published a work on the political crisis in China. His recreation is alpine climbing, and in addition to the chief centres. Sir .Tosepb Walfon intends to visit Lake Wnkatipu, the Bailer and Otira Gorges, &nd Rotorua, He will complete his New Zealand tour at Auckland.
