ATHENÆUM CUP DEBATES.

TnE series of competitions for the Athenaeum Cup were continued on 'Wednesday ovbnina, when the Unherfity and Poneonby teams Met at the Leys Institute. Mr. W. Mcil-th presided. Thi> subject was " That tho rise ol the Eastern Nations is a Menace to Australasia." University, represented by Messrs. W. M. Jones, A. is. Jamieson, and W. D. MeLivir, advocated tho affirmative, and Ponsonby lilussra. K. McMullin, C. S. Lees, and K. W. Harold) supported tho negative. Mr. H. P. Richmond acted as judge. The subject was ably contested by U,;n teams. Thb nidge awarded tho verdict to University, by the narrow margin of four marks. He gave a criticism of tho argument in support of his judgment. This is the first defeat Ponsonby .as suffered in tho Athenasura Cup competitions for the past three yearn, during which period they have debated on 13 occasions without defeat. It is interesting to note that it was the University team which gained the victory in I'JlO after a debate that excited considerable public interest. Both in 1911 and 1912 Ponßonby were successful. As University have suffered defeat at the hands of Marist Broth" *. Iho Marist Brothers' team are now leading for the cup.
