FORTITUDE OF A MINER.
PINNED DOWN FOR HOURS.
A fatal accident occurred at the Victoria Syndicate's antimony mine at Heathcote (Victoria) last week. Joseph Henry Burns, a married man living at Creswick, lost his life, and George Green, of South Heathcote, had his left leg broken, and sustained other injuries.
The two men were engaged re-timbering an old drive when a fall of earth took place while putting in a set. Burns was thrown towards the face of the drive, and Green was forced in an opposite direction. Both men were pinned down with the earth and timber. The meu were not missed till the shift went up at midnight. When the men were ordered down to release those injured they found Green fastened by the legs and part of the body. He was soon released. Burns was not extricated until about 5.15 p.m. next day, being in the same position for about 22 hours. He kept up a conversation with the men during the whole time, but collapsed immediately he was released, and died a few minutes afterwards.
