BIG TUNNEL CONTRACT.
ON STRATFORD RAILWAY. ABOUT £100,<f00 TO BE EXPENDED. JBT TEXEORATHSPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Thursday. A contract has been let by the Public ; Works Department for the construction of fa tunnel nearly a mile in length at the ; northern end oi: the Stratford-Okahukura railway, which mil connect the provinces of Auckland and Taranaki. I ' The tunnel, which-is about two miles from Okahukura (on the Main Trunk line) will be 75 chains in length, and the contract price is in. the neighbourhood of £100,000. The exadi amount is not. ,yet ascertainable. Three years are to ba allowed for the~'"t,on£trGcti6!i of the tunnel. The formation work from Okahukura, where the Stratford hue joins '. the Main Trunk railway, has now reached the spot at which the tunnelling will commence. It is not likely that much work will be done on the Ohura side of the tunnel until the tunnel itself .is approaching^completion.
