':• ->;... ~...* ...... — : >-.'.■■■ DISPUTE WITH EMPLOYERS., The Conciliation Council, under the. presidency of the commissioner (Mr.. T. Harle Giles), sat yesterday to hear a dispute between the Aerated Water Employees' Union and the Brewers, Wine and Spirit Merchants,. and derated Water - Manufacturers' Union of Employers. The assessors were:— the employers, Messrs. 11. R. Menzies, W. Handley, and F. Whittome; for the employees, Messrs. G. Mclvnight, W. Day, and W. H. Reid. Mr. C. Grosvenor appeared for the employers, and Mr. T. Long for the employees. The demands made were for a. 44-hour week throughout the year, instead of a 49-hour week between November 1 and April 30, and a 44-hour week for the remainder of the year, as at present. Wages were asked for as follows :—Foremen of head factories, £3 10s; foremen of branch factories, £3 ss; cordial makers at head factories, £3 10s; cordial makers, £3 ss; machine bottlers, packers, wirers, and general labourers, £2 14s; casual labour, Is, 4£d per hour. An. increase for overtime was asked for work after the first two hours, with Is 6d per hour in addition to ordinary wages for all work done on Sundays and holidays. Nine holidays during the year were asked for, while wages for youths were set down as follows :—From 16 to 18 years, £1 ss; IB to 19, £1 10s; 19 to 20, £1 15s; 20 to 21, £2..". The employers' counter-proposalsi were based upon the old award, with slight modifications. They objected to a preference clause being granted. ■ ' The council considered the proposals in committee, and had not arrived vat any final arrangement when an adjournment was made for the day. '
