WHAT IS A SQUARE DEALT
Sir,—A square has four sides all connected. Our Dominion square baa on the one side employees, on the other aide em- , ployers, the general public, and the law forming' • the intermediate and connecting aides. This square, white its formation is maintained, is a powerful combination for promoting permanent progress, and profitable peaceful pursuits. Each side ha* its place and power, but no one side is the. whole square. Therefore when dither the employing or the employees' side attempt to dominate all, the public and law sides are a great check. The public side is not as nebulous a recent writer asserts, for it has great, power, and can act vigorously, when roused, as recently shown in Sydney. During my 78 years of life the public has frequently-manifested its power, and proved to the one ide that it was only part of a square, and that permanent success requires square dealing. The law side is strong and inflexible, but not unchangable, yet any change requires the aid of the ''public, unless both the other sides agree. Political parties are useful in our Dominion square, but those who act only for the employees or the employers are bargaining mercenaries unworthy of support. I would vote for a trustworthy candidate from any side of our square provided* ,he will act for the interests of all its sides, but not otherwise, for that would not be a square deal. The square dealing of the Maseey
Ministry is admirable. Edwin Care.
